Effective Strategies For Sustainable Positioning In Eco-friendly Packaging And Recycling Initiatives

In this study, we aim to investigate the views of environmental management representatives on the extent of the contribution of green hotel practices to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve this goal, a questionnaire was created and directed to the person responsible for environmental activities in the hotel investigated, who was selected by making a simple sample. A sample of 48 participants from four to five Green Star hotels was surveyed, representing 63% of the total number of Green Star certified hotels in Egypt. The results of the study show that the implementation of green hotel projects in four and five Green Star hotels that were analyzed made a positive contribution to achieving SDG 6, SDG 12, SDG 7 and SDG 13 respectively. The main reason behind the Green Star certification is the hotel’s commitment to the environment. The study also showed that, in general, there were significant differences between four and five Green Star hotels in all the SDGs mentioned. The main point of this study is that hotel managers should integrate green hotel practices into their operational plans to achieve the SDGs related to the environment.

Bender [6] analyzed the results of a survey conducted by TripAdvisor and stated that almost two-thirds (62%) of travelers consider environmental issues when deciding to stay at a hotel. Hotels benefit from the implementation of sustainable practices in two ways: first, implementation leads to increased resource efficiency and savings related to energy and water consumption; second, this serves as a marketing tool to attract consumers who are interested in sustainability [5, 7].
