Our food production system today faces many challenges. This includes increasing demand for food products due to global population growth, and the need for climate-smart solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss due to agriculture. Our food production systems need new and better technologies to meet sustainability challenges. These challenges can be grouped into the three pillars of sustainability that support people, planet and profits.
Research has shown that more than a third of global greenhouse gas emissions are related to food production, processing and packaging (United Nations, 2021). This is particularly worrying because to be able to feed two billion people by 2050, we will need to produce 60 percent more food than we do today (World Resources Institute, 2018).
The World Is Growing Hungrier For Solutions
As a result, food producers are under pressure to grow more food in a sustainable way. For example, an EIT Food survey of 20,000 consumers in 18 European countries found that three-quarters of consumers are concerned about the environmental impact of the food system, while a third believe their food is sustainable (EIT Food, 2021).
