Their eyes move toward the sound, pay attention to the music, and respond to changes in the pitch of your voice.

Eventually, babies begin to recognize their own name, and babbling intensifies as they begin to string together longer babbling sounds.
Speech and language milestones at 9 months: imitate speech/non-speech sounds, imitate actions/gestures, see objects when spoken to, recognize their names and babble more.

When we move to 12 months, we can again use the baby’s age to remember these milestones.
It could be something other than “mama” and “dada” and the vocabulary could be even more depending on the child.
Remember that at the babbling stage, they may say “mama” and “dada” without much meaning, but by 12 months they will start to give meaning to their words.

Additionally, they begin to understand simple phrases, instructions, requests, and commands such as “Come here.” and “Don’t touch.”
Children also begin to understand and answer simple questions non-verbally by nodding and shaking their heads, or perhaps being given an object when they ask for it.
Eventually, they understand and recognize the names and words for common objects such as balls, shoes, cups, juice, dogs, etc.

The understanding stage is a process and all of the above will not happen exactly at 12 months of age.
In contrast, at 12 months of age, children begin to develop the speech and language skills mentioned above and continue to develop these skills throughout the 2nd year of life.
12-month pediatric milestones for speech and language: Vocabulary of 1-2 words, recognizing words for common objects and understanding requests, instructions, commands, and simple questions.
School Age Growth And Development Milestones Pediatric Nursing Review
At or around 18 months of age, a child may experience a “word spurt” where their vocabulary increases drastically to 50 words by 2 years of age.
For example, they recognize and point to familiar objects or people in pictures, point to pictures in books when readers say their names, and point to familiar body parts when asked (eyes, ears, nose, etc.).
The child’s ability to understand and follow simple commands such as “Put down the toy” improves. or “Throw the ball.”

Speech and language milestones 18 months: vocabulary 10-20 words, repeats words heard, follows simple commands/questions, points to familiar objects and body parts when asked.
Moving on to age 2, we can use 2 to remember the “2 word phrase” milestone.
At the age of 2 years, children begin to follow 2 steps, such as “Take your toy and give it to mom.”

2 year old speech and language milestones: uses 2 word phrases, takes 2 steps, has a vocabulary of 50 or more, uses words/gestures when playing, and makes animal sounds.
Just as we use “2-word phrases” to remember the accomplishments of 2-year-olds, we can now use “3-word phrases” to remember the accomplishments of 3-year-olds.
They also begin to understand spatial concepts such as ‘inside’, ‘above’, or ‘below’, as well as concepts involving different colors and times of day.
