Concerns about the rapid aging population are mainly related to the need for adequate housing and welfare for the elderly. Poor housing design for the elderly has led to accusations that the needs of the elderly are not being adequately met. For example, less attention is paid to design capabilities that facilitate aging and thus improve the quality of life of older adults. This study examines the impact of interior design on the lives of older adults by evaluating relevant research on the topic and current design trends. Through keyword searches, 51 empirical studies focusing on senior housing in terms of architectural characteristics, home environment, and energy efficiency from 2013 to 2022 were identified and analyzed. The survey found that there is minimal correlation between interior design efforts and the actual housing needs of seniors. This thematic review provides a summary of this literature for use by researchers and designers, and recommends that future research be used in inclusive interior design to better meet the needs of older adults.

[1]. Most of the residents of inadequate housing are low-income people, ethnic minorities, indigenous peoples, women, single-child families, and elderly people with disabilities, who are vulnerable to inequality and inequity. The aging community faces enormous housing challenges. Better understanding and attention to the diverse housing needs of older adults is urgently needed [2]. Inclusive and cost-effective home design is essential to prevent age-related changes in age and lifestyle changes. This strategy is very important to avoid cost problems related to the relocation of citizens and the modification of the interior of the houses [3]. Population aging is an important policy issue, putting economic pressure on countries to provide adequate housing and services for older people. A living environment that suits the needs, desires and habits of the elderly is essential to provide them with a good quality of life, as they are closer to home than other age groups and are affected by inadequate housing [4]. In both developed and developing countries, there are older households living alone, such as couples or people in care, due to the transition from extended families to nuclear families [5]. Older people can live longer in youth-oriented homes. However, houses built with new concept designs may confuse residents who are not familiar with these novel design features [5]. Elements that support health, independence, and autonomy should be the focus of interior design for the elderly [6]. Designers must produce homes that meet the needs of the elderly, support their daily activities, and enhance their independence and active participation in all aspects of society [7]. Therefore, designers should focus on innovative design for interior or home design to meet the needs of people of all ages and to help people remain independent in their “home” [8].

Global aging policies and frameworks are based on the ideal of an “inclusive and/or universal home” as a reference point for healthy aging [9, 10]. However, design approaches that emphasize inclusivity are contradictory because they suggest that one design cannot meet the needs of everyone. Therefore, architects and designers may strive to design in an age-friendly and inclusive manner. Although many studies have been conducted on family accessibility, little effort has been made to measure the effectiveness of accessibility features or to analyze the relationship between the most meaningful and satisfying features and use by older adults [11]. The increasing number of elderly people, together with the lack of adequate interior design for existing homes, leads to the challenge of adequate housing provision, which allows the elderly to age in place and protect their autonomy and independence. This thematic review article aims to explore global design practices in nursing homes. Housing adaptations are essential for seniors to remain independent in their own homes for the long term. Therefore, this study aims to identify global practices that aim to provide high-quality interior design that serves people at all stages of life. The disparate research topics are brought together in one review article with the aim of promoting a holistic design approach that will facilitate subsequent researchers and designers to integrate all factors involved in the successful design of senior housing. Question 1: What are the key topics related to senior housing interior design discussed in the literature between 2013 and 2022, and from there, what conceptual framework should support the interior design of inclusive housing for this population?

The analytical procedure used in this thematic literature review was conducted using ATLAS.ti 22.2.5, a qualitative research tool used for coding literature reviews by Zairul et al. [13] describe how this software can be used for thematic evaluation [14, 15, 16] (Table 1). Thematic analysis has been described as a method of creating themes by thoroughly researching the topic. We can then identify trends and develop themes that understand the underlying themes. We then analyze and interpret these research findings and suggest approaches for future senior housing design.

Who We Are

Due to the different main topic areas, Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus databases were selected to provide comprehensive coverage of the topic. Scopus was chosen because of its extensive collection of peer-reviewed articles, and Web of Science was chosen because all journals indexed with standard impact factors in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) can be found there. When searching for peer-reviewed articles, most of those found in Scopus and Elsevier’s Web of Science also appear in other databases: Google Scholar, for example. For this reason, the authors found the first two databases to be more complete. The search terms used were general keywords reflecting retirement home design, retirement home design, and vintage home design. These keywords were used because the search was focused on articles related to interior design. When we search for keywords like “senior living” and “senior living interior design,” similar articles are returned, plus a few other related topics related to nursing homes and senior care.

A joint consultation was held. Specific queries following the grammar of each database were used to limit the search to a specific field. The initial search returned 267 articles from Web of Science and 103 articles from Scopus. Of these articles, 318 were discarded because they did not focus on high-end interior design (see Figure 1). A number of publications have discussed this topic in a wide range of areas, including Elders’ Perspectives on Aging.
