Heman’s aim is to reimagine the traditional sari – imbued with centuries of cultural significance – as a modern garment. “I wanted to create a work that embraced this heritage while also moving towards a more modern perspective. Creating a bridge between old, traditional saris and what we believe saris can do, and contrasting old, beautiful designs with modern technology,” Hemani explains. FIT is part of the State University of New York and is considered the “MIT for the fashion industry”. 3D printing has been embraced by the fashion world for its ability to print rigid, lightweight structural parts, hems and fasteners with textures and effects that cannot be achieved with traditional methods. With the support of FIT Assistant Professor Amy Sperber, an evangelist for the use of 3D printing in fashion, Hemani set out to modernize the traditional sari, drawing inspiration from Western culture and its Indian roots its to create a contemporary work.

Hemani worked alongside the fashion team to bring her designs to life with stunning 3D embellishments for collars, sleeves and legs.

To ensure the entire design reflects a cohesive look and feel, the colors in the trims are modeled after the floral print on the body, and the collar is cut to the contour of the neckline.

“I learned so much in just one semester! I ran into some problems that needed to be fixed; It was a big learning curve for me,” Hemani said.

“For example, mesh fabric has minimal stretch after being 3D printed, so my seams are more difficult to match. And it’s hard to get your favorite fabric into the machine. I broke a lot of needles! But in the end the whole piece came together and looked cohesive.”

Decorative details in Hemani’s design were 3D printed on J850™ TechStyle™. This direct-to-fabric 3D printer provides superior surface adhesion because the mesh fabric is “sandwiched” between thin layers of plastic.

Not only cohesive, Heman’s design also made a big splash at the FIT Future of Fashion 2023 exhibition, and Professor Sperber was clearly impressed with Heman’s achievement: “This is a museum-level work. This is not just a college fashion show.” Vogue attended and Heman’s designs were praised in the magazine’s coverage of the event.

Professor Sperber is very excited about the future of fashion with 3D printing technology: “This technology is the missing link in the technical aspect of fashion design.
