Last week I was contacted by some small businesses who were considering cultural awareness training, but weren’t sure whether they would benefit from it, so with their permission we took the training. Kids Steps Speech Pathology is a private practice in Coffs Harbor in the beautiful Guminger country, also serving Grafton, Yamba, Macksville and New England. The team provides a range of services to support children with speech and language disorders who require support. The incidence of speech and language disorders is high in Aboriginal populations and the Kids Steps team, who work with many Aboriginal families, want to ensure that Aboriginal families are appropriately included in treatment to support our efforts and they can be supported. The NDIS means more families can access the treatments they need and as an NDIS provider the Kids Steps team is well placed to support these families and non-Aboriginal businesses with the changes in practice required. Under the leadership of Nathanya Fall, the team treats its customers like friends. As a mom who has children in speech therapy, I like this approach. I know how important it is to build a positive relationship between a child and their ‘Koori’, so when Nathanya told me they were looking for opportunities to support their Koori friends in any way they could, I was grateful and excited. All our cultural awareness sessions are tailored to meet the needs of the participants and our teachers are able to support the Kids Steps team with a number of strategies they can incorporate into their offering to provide Aboriginal families with the service To help you feel more comfortable. The Kids Steps team was curious to learn how they could get more involved in the tribal community, so we talked about opportunities to participate in community outreach programs, community meetings, and inter-agency events outside of the Kids Steps offices. These conversations gave the team the knowledge of where to engage with the community and the confidence to attend these events, knowing they were welcome. Kids Steps’ respectful approach to working with our children is wonderful and the local community are delighted to have such a wonderful service. If only all small businesses could welcome our crowds like this!
Another session this year that was very important to me was our trip to Tempe OOSH. The team led by Helen Pentecost is highly respected by the community they serve. Children love to be included, and we all know how important it is to know that our children are safe and happy when we can’t be with them. We had not been approached by OOSH before about training and Helen’s approach is very refreshing and hopefully many OOSH providers will adopt it.
Customer Centricity: Benefits And Implementation Tips
Helen told me that ‘training to make staff culturally competent to understand the unique history of Australia’s First Nations peoples will only help them in providing sensitive and appropriate care to children from Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other diverse backgrounds. We talk a lot about creating culturally inclusive environments in schools, so it’s great that OOSH is taking this on board and taking steps to ensure their services are inclusive. An approach that recognizes the importance of all students and staff at the center of understanding Aboriginal people and our role as custodians of the land highlights Helen’s approach to me as best practice and I would recommend this approach to other OOSH providers.
